ABSTRACT
For centuries, the Indian society endured numerous social ills. The primary issues include the caste system, the poor status of women, lack of education, child marriage, idol worship, the sati practice, polygamy, and the dowry system. Different reform movements such as Arya Samaj, Ramkrishna Mission, Indian Social Conferences, Mohammedan Literacy Society, Aligarh Movement, and Ahmadiya Movement were initiated to address these problems. Certainly, it was due to their persistent efforts and diligent work that numerous social ills were eliminated. These movements exerted significant pressure on the British Government to enact different laws periodically aimed at eradicating social injustices. Undoubtedly, some social issues were so ingrained that it was challenging to eliminate them quickly. Certain issues such as the dowry system, lack of education, etc., persist and present significant challenges to contemporary reformers. Undoubtedly, new reform initiatives must be launched to eliminate the social ills that continue to exist in India.
